Born in 1955 in Surrey, England, Nichola McAuliffe is a talented television and stage actress who achieved fame for her starring role in the very popular Granada Television comedy 'Surgical Spirit,' in which she played a caustic-tongued surgeon, Sheila Sabatini , and as the 'other woman' in the show 'Pig in the Middle.' Between 2001 and 2002 she also appeared in 'Coronation Street' as a love interest of Ken Barlow.
Nichola's numerous theatre credits include several West End runs. She was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award in 1988 (1987 season) for "Best Actress in a Musical" for her performance in 'Kiss Me Kate'. More recent TV roles were in 'The Sound of Drums', a 'Doctor Who' episode screened on 23 June 2007, and in in 'My Family' as the judge in episode 'Life Begins at Fifty'.
Nichola has also had some success as a writer; a novel 'The Crime Tsar' was published in 2003. Also published in 2003 was 'Attila, Loolagax and the Eagle'. 'A Fanny Full of Soap: The Story of a West End Musical' was published in 2007. Nichola is married to Don MacKay, crime reporter for the Daily Mirror.
